Traveling to Virginia Beach for Breast Reconstruction

Traveling to Virginia Beach for breast reconstruction involves several considerations to ensure a smooth experience. Here’s a guide on what to expect and how to plan for your journey:

Consultation Process

  • Our surgeons offer initial consultations where you can discuss your medical history, treatment options, and expected outcomes. If you’re traveling from a distance, we offer virtual consultations to discuss your case before an in-person visit.

Travel Logistics

Transportation:

  • By Air: The nearest major airport is Norfolk International Airport (ORF), located about 20 miles from Virginia Beach. From there, you can take a taxi, rideshare, or shuttle service to your accommodation.
  • By Car: Virginia Beach is accessible via several major highways, including Interstate 64 and U.S. Route 13. If driving, ensure you have a comfortable vehicle and plan your route in advance.

Accommodation:

  • Book a hotel or rental close to the surgical facility to minimize travel time and make it easier to attend follow-up appointments.
  • Consider staying at a hotel that offers medical rates or extended stays, as you might need to stay in Virginia Beach for a few days to weeks, depending on your recovery plan.

Pre-Arrival Preparation:

  • Arrange for someone to accompany you, as you will need assistance immediately following surgery and possibly during your stay.
  • Pack comfortable clothing, particularly loose-fitting tops and bras that will be easy to put on after surgery.

Before the Surgery

Pre-Operative Consultation:

  • Plan to arrive in Virginia Beach at least a day or two before your surgery to allow time for a pre-operative consultation and any necessary lab tests.
  • During this consultation, your surgeon will review the surgical plan, discuss post-operative care, and answer any last-minute questions.

Local Environment:

  • Virginia Beach offers a scenic environment that can be calming before surgery. If you have time, you might consider a leisurely walk along the beach or visiting a local park to relax.

Post-Surgery Recovery

Immediate Post-Operative Care:

  • After the surgery, you will need to rest and recover. Most patients are advised to stay in the area for at least a week to ensure proper monitoring and to attend follow-up appointments.
  • Arrange for a comfortable space in your accommodation where you can rest with easy access to any necessities.

Follow-Up Appointments:

  • Schedule follow-up appointments with your surgeon before traveling home. These appointments are crucial for monitoring your healing, removing drains or stitches, and addressing any concerns.

Local Resources:

  • Virginia Beach has a range of pharmacies, medical supply stores, and wellness centers where you can purchase any necessary medications, dressings, or support garments.
  • Some facilities may offer connections to local nursing or caregiver services if you require additional help during your recovery.

Recovery and Enjoying Virginia Beach

Rest and Relaxation:

  • Virginia Beach is known for its tranquil beaches and mild climate, making it an ideal place for recovery. If your surgeon permits, you can enjoy light activities such as beach walks, gentle yoga, or visiting local attractions.
  • However, avoid sun exposure to surgical areas and refrain from any strenuous activities.

Access to Amenities:

  • Virginia Beach is well-equipped with restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores where you can easily find healthy meals that support recovery. Consider having meals delivered to your accommodation for convenience.

Traveling Home

Transportation After Recovery:

  • When your surgeon clears you to travel, arrange for comfortable transportation back home. If flying, consider requesting wheelchair assistance at the airport to minimize exertion.
  • Ensure that your travel arrangements accommodate your need for rest and that you avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities during your journey.

Continued Care:

  • Once home, continue to follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding wound care, physical activity, and any additional follow-up appointments. If you require further assistance, your surgeon may coordinate with your local healthcare providers.

Additional Considerations

Insurance and Payment:

  • Confirm that your surgery and related expenses are covered by your insurance if applicable. Some insurance plans may cover travel expenses for out-of-town medical care, so it’s worth inquiring.
  • Ensure all paperwork, including pre-authorization and referral letters, is completed before your trip.

Emotional Support:

  • Traveling for surgery can be emotionally taxing. Make sure you have a support system in place, whether it’s a family member traveling with you or virtual support from friends and loved ones back home.

There aren't enough good words to describe Dr. Jablonka. He's the absolute best. He's kind, caring, and talented. I came to him broken after my double mastectomy reconstruction was a bust. He put me back together. Brought back my self-esteem. Gave me my life back. Love, love, love him and his amazing support staff.

Dr. Jablonka is hands down the absolute best doctor I’ve ever had. He is caring, compassionate and really takes his time with his patients. I had complicated breast reconstruction surgery after a double mastectomy. And of course I had complications while recuperating. So it required a couple more surgeries. Dr. Jablonka did an amazing job and was right by my side the entire time. He is a very skilled plastic surgeon. I highly, highly recommend. I give him 10 stars out of 5!!!

Dr. Jablonka is an amazing surgeon. During my consultation for DIEP I knew within minutes that he was the surgeon for me. Not only did he have all the education and experience he was also very easy to talk to and took the time to thoroughly explain the procedure and answer all of my questions. Listening to him explain the DIEP flap procedure I instantly knew that not only was this his profession, but truly his passion. I am now almost 3 months post-op and so happy with my results. My breasts look natural and they are made with my tissue. I am beyond grateful to Dr. Jablonka and his incredible team for making one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done so much easier. If you have to have breast reconstruction for preventative reasons or because of a breast cancer diagnosis I highly recommend Dr. Jablonka.

Dr Jablonka is a phenomenal surgeon and he truly cares for his patients. I had a breast reconstruction with DIEP flap post prophylactic double mastectomy from 12 years prior. He removed the old implants using my own fat and placing them above the pectoral muscle not under like before. The look and the feel is so natural. I don’t have that constant tightness and hardness in my breasts. I feel and look normal again. He has been very kind throughout the process. He explained everything patiently every time. His staff Elizabeth and his nurse Stephanie were always there for me as well helping every step of the way. The front desk receptionist (I can’t recall her name) and every one else there that I came in contact with was kind polite and attentive. Everybody at the office took great care of me. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

Being diagnosed with breast cancer at 37 was H.A.R.D. Having a double mastectomy burned even more. Losing one expander and being flat for months was the icing on the cake. Then I was referred to Dr. Jablonka as a DIEP Flap candidate. I knew from the first time I met Dr. Jablonka that he was amazing. He was very thorough and took all the time in the world to explain to myself and to my husband what the process would be and answered all of our questions. His staff is top notch and just as sweet as they come. There are no words to adequately express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Jablonka and his team for giving me confidence back and making me a proud survivor!
